Using Edie Windsor’s case as the catalyst, this rousing documentary takes a closer look at the metamorphosis of marriage equality in America. The film chronicles unlikely heroes octogenarian Edie Windsor and her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, on their quest for justice. The love story of Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer captivated the LGBTQ community leading up to and since their 2007 wedding in Toronto. Their story, however, was far from over. When Thea passed away in 2009, Edie was faced with a monstrous estate tax bill, the federal government firmly denying benefits to same-sex couples. So began the fight again.

Anthony’s overbearing mother won’t give her blessing unless Andrew’s estranged mother also gives her blessing and the ceremony is performed by a priest. Matters are further complicated by Andrew’s ex-boyfriend, intent on breaking up the couple.

Buddies is the gay classic you’ve never seen. This 2018 film is actually a re-release of Arthur J. Bresan, Jr’s 1985 final film, the first feature film about AIDS. It is an incredible, almost documentary-like, time capsule: Robert, a gay California activist diagnosed with AIDS and abandoned by friends and family, is assigned “buddy” David from the gay community center. In the simplicity of the story, Buddies is a timeless portrayal of an entire era in gay history. (Non-juried screening)

Some critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.
